Mrs. Milligan
Dear West Families,

First, a very special thank you to all of our parents who attended one or more of our first two evening events:  Sixth-grade/New Student Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night: Grades Seven and Eight and the PVMS West Book Fair.  We appreciate your time as well as your willingness to partner with us in your child’s/children’s education. Please remember that you can contact individual teachers and teams whenever you have questions, comments, and/or concerns.

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful week and are as excited about some of our upcoming events and activities as we are!

New News and Reminders:

Title I Meetings - West will be holding two Title I Parent-School Partnership meetings.  The first will be held on Wednesday (9/18/19) morning at 7:30 a.m.; the second will be held Wednesday (9/18/19) evening at 6:00 p.m.  We are hoping to meet with parents of West students who either have received or will be receiving Title I support/services. The objectives of the meeting are to inform parents of the school's participation in Title I, to explain what is required of a Title I school, to discuss how to improve parent-school communications, and to inform our parents of their rights to be involved. Each year, we invite parents who are willing to provide input regarding the planning, review, and improvement of our Title I policy, program, allocation of funds, as well as a number of other Title I-specific topics.

The American Math Competition, Version 8 - is a test designed for advanced middle school students who are interested in testing themselves as mathematical thinkers.   The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice test. The material covered on the test is middle level math curriculum, including topics such as:  probability, estimation, percent, spatial visualization, everyday application, and reading/interpreting charts. No Algebra is required. The contest is for individual recognition only.  Interested students must see Mrs. Lederman for a paper copy of the registration form and return a signed registration form to Mrs. Lederman, room 207, no later than Wednesday, September 18th by 2:20 p.m.

State Assessment Reports - PSSA and Keystone Reports will be sent home with your child on Sept. 20, 2019.

Check your email for details - West and West’s Student Council will host our first school DANCE.  PVMS West students are invited to join us.  The cost to attend is $5. Snacks will be on sale during the dance.  (If students plan to snack, they should bring an additional money to purchase food items.)  In order to be eligible to attend the dance, students must be in attendance at school on the day of the dance. Also, West dances are only open to PVMS West students.  See your email for drop off and pick up information. Carpooling is encouraged. (It is a good idea to establish a pick-up point, i.e. a certain light pole, the flag, concrete bench, etc.)  Students are encouraged to dress as they would for school, and shoes are to remain on for the duration of the dance.

The PAYS (Pennsylvania Youth Survey) – Our sixth- and eighth-grade students will be participating in this survey in early October.  For more information about the survey, please see - https://www.pccd.pa.gov/Juvenile-Justice/Pages/Pennsylvania-Youth-Survey-(PAYS)-2019.aspx, specifically “Information about the Pennsylvania Youth Survey.”  More information to come.

Dress Reminder – West is a climate-controlled building, so many of our classrooms run a little cool.  All students are encouraged to leave a sweatshirt and sweatpants in their lockers or gym lockers.  Also, for students who prefer to wear flip-flops, we also suggest leaving a pair of sneakers on site for classes such as PE, Tech Ed, FCS, science, and art.  Our dress code can be found in our Student Handbook.

PVSD Foundation – Please click here to see the Boon Supply (formerly Mixed Bag Designs) fundraiser attachment.

Sixth-grade’s Camp - Outdoor School – West’s sixth-grade teachers will be sending a letter and permission slip home for an outdoor school field trip.  (The main office will follow up with an email and attachments as well.) If any family needs financial assistance, please contact a school principal.

Activity Fee:  If your seventh- or eighth-grade child is planning to play a sport this year or take part in a club/activity, there is a $100 fee each year; this covers all activities for the year. A complete list of activities can be found on West’s website. Please click here to read the Activity Letter.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210, Press #1.  For detailed information about our attendance procedures, please refer to the Student Handbook.  (The Handbook can be found on the PVSD webpage by clicking the Parents tab, Handbooks, and Middle School Handbook.)  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

from Mrs. Lind - Nurse’s Notes:  Welcome back to what I hope to be another healthy and successful school year!  Please remember that sixth-grade students require a physical examination and updated immunizations if necessary, and seventh-grade students require a dental examination. If your child has had these examinations over the summer, please be sure to send a copy to the Nurse's office so your child's health record can be updated.  Student's health records and immunization cards stay with your child throughout his/her school years, and is important that this information stays up to date. Your cooperation with this is most appreciated! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child. I can be reached at 484-977-7210, ext. 4 or emailed at clind@pvsd.org.

from West’s Home and School:  The first few weeks of school are always busy, and the Home and School would like to check in to make sure you have all of the information that we have sent home.  Please check folders and backpacks for our Volunteer Sheet, Spiritwear Flyer (Orders due this Sunday. Website is https://pvwest.itemorder.com), umbrella order information, a Kidstuff Book, our Walk for West flyer, and a cool MAGNET inside the Walk for West flyer envelope with important phone numbers, Home and School's gift to our West families.  We hope you enjoy them and find them useful! If you are missing any of that information or have any questions, please contact Amy Butler at amyjpowers@hotmail.com or any of our board members:  Kim Fortino, Stacey Verguldi, and Christine Leifer.    You can also check out our Facebook page for more information.

Home and School is also collecting donations for our students to use when they go outside at lunchtime, our first dance, and the East/West Activity Night.  If you would like to help, please sign-up on our sign up genius link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E054DA5A92AA57-donations.

We would also love to see you our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library.   We will be talking about Walk for West and voting on our budget for the year.

Warmest Regards,

Donna Milligan, Principal, PVMS West
