Principal's Report October 13, 2017

posted Oct 13, 2017, 1:50 PM by Barbara Quintangeli   [ updated Oct 13, 2017, 1:52 PM ]

Dear PVMS West Parents and Guardians,

Fall has finally arrived! The leaves are turning and the temperatures are dropping.  Please see the Walk for West update along with some grade-specific information.  As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Walk for West - West held its ninth annual walkathon fundraiser today, Friday, October 13th. The walk, sponsored by our Home and School Association, incorporates wellness and fitness while supporting character education in the guise of one-book-one-school, author/speaker visits, positive behavior interventions and supports materials and activities, etc. The walk followed the school year’s first spirit week which featured Comfy Pants Day, Crazy Hat and Hair Day, and PV Spirit Wear Day. Students were asked to generate donations from family and friends and post laps on the school’s track.  Home and School provided both music and refreshments.

Our top donating homerooms from each grade win a classroom party, courtesy of Home and School, AND the largely coveted Golden Sneaker trophy; in addition, the students with the largest donations win a prize, and every student with a $25.00 donation has a chance to win a prize at tonight’s dance! Thank you to all of our participants, volunteers, and generous supporters!

A Message from Home and School re:  Walk for West - We will continue to accept any/all donations next week.

Dance - please see your email for details.

6th Grade Math and Literacy Explorations Classes – Parents are reminded that these classes are not graded; the period has been designed to develop and strengthen students’ skills in mathematics and literacy.  Groups are flexible in nature and will be adjusted throughout the course of the school year.  Some students might remain with the same teacher most of the year while other students may move groups more frequently.  Teams review their students’ progress through assessments, observations, and classroom performance and adjust accordingly.

Areas of focus for literacy include, but are not limited to:  critical thinking, comprehension, and exposure to increasingly challenging texts.  Areas of focus for mathematics include, but are not limited to:  extensions or reinforcement of mathematical concepts with an emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving.

Sixth-grade Camp Reminder - Permission slips/payments are due!  Students must have completed permission slips to participate in this field trip.  (Reminder – Students have been asked not to bring electronics on this trip.)
