Principal's Report - September 29, 2017

posted Sep 29, 2017, 12:25 PM by Linda Larzelere   [ updated Sep 29, 2017, 12:28 PM ]

Dear West families,

It is hard to believe that a full month has already come and gone.  The students have settled into their daily routines, and we have already reached mid-marking period.  Therefore, I encourage all parents to check the Home Access Center (HAC) to monitor your child’s/children’s progress.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s performance, please contact your child’s team of teachers or individual teachers.  Let the counselors or me know if we can be of additional assistance as well.

PSSA/Keystone Information and Parent Letters – The spring 2017 PSSA/Keystone reports are being  sent home with our students today, September 29, 2017, so please check backpacks!  Student envelopes will contain a state letter(s) along with assessment results.

CDT’s – Classroom Diagnostic Assessment – Our students are finishing up the English/Language Arts CDT’s today and/or Monday.  These diagnostic tests are administered via the computer and provide us with information about strengths and needs.  The assessment is not graded but does provide our teachers with information to guide instruction.  (We will be running a second CDT series for all Algebra I students during the week of October 10th.)

Sixth-grade Camp Reminder - Permission slips/payments are due next week!

The PAYS (Pennsylvania Youth Survey) – Our sixth- and eighth-grade students will be participating in this survey next week during one social studies class period.

Viking Block Activities – Our seventh- and eighth-grade students will be selecting Viking Block activities very soon!  We finalized our lists (Click here for the seventh grade list; click here for the eighth grade list) of activities and advisors this morning.  In early October, an email will be sent out to families for students to select the first round of activities for the school year.  These activities will take place two days per cycle from mid-October through mid-December.  The other four days per cycle will remain advisory days.

Walk for West – We are gearing up for our annual “Walk for West:  Put Your Best Foot Forward” fundraiser which is scheduled for October 12th.  (The Walk for West dance is on October 13th.)  This year’s proceeds will help fund character education in the guise of one-book-one-school, author/speaker visits, introductory positive behavior interventions and supports materials and activities, etc. Click here to view the Walk for West flyer.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  For detailed information about our attendance procedures, please refer to the Student Handbook.  (The Handbook can be found on the PVSD webpage by clicking the Parents tab, Handbooks, and Middle School Handbook.  As per my last Principal’s Report, the current attendance policy as written is due for revision this fall.)  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

Bus Deck Dress – Each morning West students may congregate on the bus deck for fifteen minutes (or less).  As the temperature drops, please encourage your child to wear a sweatshirt or a coat.

Activity Fee Reminder – All seventh- and eighth-grade activities are subject to an activity fee.  These fees, including any/all materials fees, should be directed to Mrs. Barber in our main office.
