Dear PVMS West Families,

I hope this update finds you doing well as the month of October comes quickly to a close.  Our first marking period concludes on November 2nd, and report cards will be available electronically after noon on the 9th.  In addition, parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for November 20th and November 21st.

Please see below for a variety of items that will keep you informed about District and/or MS West events and opportunities.

Printed Report Cards – Although our schools no longer print report cards for all students, if you would like to request a print copy, simply email a MS West secretary, Sue Ruby (sruby@pvsd.org) or Nancy Barber (nbarber@pvsd.org), and a printed report card will be furnished for you/sent home with your child.

Middle School West Partners with Ankhor Math Tutoring – Ankhor Math Tutoring, based at PVHS, provides a free online service for students in grades K-8 in our school district.  Our own high school students provide online tutoring, outside of school hours, at a mutually agreed upon time between the high school tutor and younger student/student’s parent.  Tutoring occurs one hour each week through collaborative documents, video chat, and an online whiteboard.  This is all provided for via the Ankhor website (https://ankhor.org/).

Fall Activity Night – On November 10, 2017, students from MS East and MS West will be invited to Home & School’s fall Activity hosted by MS West.

Character Education Programs and Activities – If they have not already done so, our students will participate in their first homeroom meeting on Nov. 2nd.  (Discussion topics will include:  Learning how to recognize situations that involve bullying, building awareness about the negative consequences of bullying, building an understanding about how a bystander’s behavior can impact bullying, and building skills necessary to help prevent bullying and safely intervene if someone is in trouble.)

On November 14th, Officer Stephen Rinker, of the Lower Frederick Township Police Department, will be meeting with our students to discuss Cyber-safety.  Officer Rinker recently served as an educational liaison, so we are very fortunate that he has offered his services to our students/the school community.

American Education Week  –  All of our schools will be welcoming parents to visit on Tuesday, November 14th; Middle School West will welcome parents between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  Please click here for more details.

Be a Part of the Conversation  - On Tuesday evening, November 14th at 6:30 p.m., West will be hosting an informational event, “Have you had the conversation?  How to talk with your kids about substances.”  The conversation is intended for parents of elementary students; however, West parents are welcome.  Click here for content and registration information.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - Parent/teacher conferences will be offered on Monday, November 20th, and Tuesday, November 21st.  Middle school conferences offer parents/guardians the opportunity to meet with their child's instructional team.  Please know that conferences are not mandatory, but our staff will be available on these two days to engage in conversations about a child's progress.  Likewise, if a team feels the need to meet with parents, a conference may also be initiated by the team of teachers.  We will be using SignUp Genius to schedule conferences this year, and next week's Principal's Report will include links to access the teams' schedules for signing up.

Walk for West Update – Our primary H&S Fundraiser raised over $4,200.00.

First Lego League Reminder – Mrs. Barber, MS West’s secretary, is collecting the materials fee for all FLL participants.

Turkey Trot - Save the date!  On Saturday morning, November 18th, PVMS West's Green Team will be hosting its first Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk on West's beautiful campus!  Fun for the entire family!

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.orgor by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  For detailed information about our attendance procedures, please refer to the Student Handbook.  (The Handbook can be found on the PVSD webpage by clicking the Parents tab, Handbooks, and Middle School Handbook.  As per past last Principal’s Reports, the current attendance policy as written is due for revision this fall.)  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

Bus Deck Dress – Friendly reminder - Since the weather has finally turned, students should be wearing coats and/or heavy sweatshirts in the morning.   Keeping a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and/or sneakers here at school is a good idea, too.

Halloween - MS West students do not dress up for Halloween.

A Note from Home and School:

Our Home and School has been in communication with the local food pantry.  They are still doing their blanket drive as well as food collection (canned goods, a priority).  West plans to keep a canned food collection bin in our main office, and as it is filled, H&S will empty the bin/deliver the donations.
