Principal’s Message, February 9, 2018

Dear PVMS West Families,

I hope this email finds you doing well as we head into the weekend.  We are preparing to begin our middle school-to-high school transition process for our eighth graders.  Additional informational items are included below.

New News:

Twitter – @PVMS_West  (Yes, we are finally Tweeting!)

Visiting Planetarium – On Thursday and Friday our sixth-grade students enjoyed an astronomy presentation, courtesy of Stars on the Move, that was as educational as it was fun.

CDT’s - Classroom Diagnostic Test – All students will be taking their second Algebra I CDT’s or 4Sight tests on Feb. 13, 2018, an early dismissal day.  These diagnostic tests are administered via the computer (Algebra I) or pencil/paper (all other mathematics classes) and provide us with information about strengths and needs.  The assessments are not graded, but they do provide our teachers with information to guide their instruction.

Ski Club – The Ski Club went on its second trip to Bear Creek yesterday.

from the Counseling Center:

8th grade - Program Planning has begun!

Eighth-grade Parents - NMTCC Open House and PVHS Program Information Night, Feb. 15, 2018.  NMTCC has agreed to open at 5:30 p.m. so that Perkiomen Valley families will be able to attend their Open House as well as our high school’s Program Information Night!  See attached.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).  For more information, please click on Attendance Guidelines under the Parents tab.  At MS West, Student Attendance Improvement Plans are initiated by district-adopted attendance letters and implemented by our social worker, a counselor, and/or an administrator in conjunction with a parent(s).

Reminders:

from the Nurse’s office:  Parents of sixth-grade students are required to submit a physical form for your child.  Physical forms can be found on the PV Website under Parents/Forms and must be completed by your physician and submitted as soon as possible.  In addition, parents of seventh-grade students are required to submit a dental form.  This form can also be found on the website.  Failure to submit these required forms results in examinations by our school physician and dentist in the spring.  If you are not sure if you've sent in the required forms, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Lind at 484.977.7210, ext. 4.

from PVMS West Yearbook:   Yearbook Ordering Information - In the electronic age, it’s rare to come across stories and photos that aren't seen from a digital screen. Lucky for us, the tradition of the yearbook is not only alive, but it is as strong as ever. It’s the one place where one can revisit friends, events, memories and stories from the school year without having to turn on a computer.  We are partnering with Jostens this year to bring you a convenient way for students to order their books.  All can order online at jostensyearbooks.com, by phone, or through the mail. It’s quick, easy, and ends the hassle of bringing money to school. Please refer to the form you received in the mail for ordering/payment options. Place your order today!  (If you have any questions regarding the PVMS West yearbook, please email dmuscatello@pvsd.org.)

from PV Foundation:   Dodgeball Tournament on March 3: Registration will close for this event at 9 p.m. on Jan. 28 (note: we have moved the registration close date up a week). If you haven't registered your team yet, please go to https://perkiomen.revtrak.net/. Visit our website for more details about the tournament: http://pvsdfoundation.org/events/

from PVSD:  Comprehensive Planning/Special Education Plan - It’s time to begin Comprehensive Planning here at PV.  Every three years, school districts are required to create a plan that helps “set the course” for the district over the next three years.  A Steering Committee made up of stakeholders (employees, parents, students, Board members, and community members) has been formed to lead this effort and is already working toward developing a mission, vision, and goals for our district.

We hope to provide helpful information throughout this process through website updates and emails.  Part of this process will also involve us asking you for feedback about our district through surveys.  Keep an eye out for future requests.  In the meantime, you can keep up to date on the Comprehensive Plan by visiting the district website for information.  Check the “News from around the district” for updates or click on the “About” tab and select “Comprehensive Planning” from the drop down menu.

Fall/Winter Weather and Attire – With the winter months ahead, it is time to think about school delays, early dismissals, and school closures.  In the event of inclement weather, families will be notified via the Blackboard Connect/Connect 5 system, which informs families of delayed openings, early dismissals, and school closures.  If a call is not received in your home and you listen to the radio or television stations, our school district closing number is 317.  Please talk with your child about procedures for an early dismissal from school.  Please be sure to update your contact information via the Home Access Center (HAC) or by notifying our office of any changes to your emergency contact numbers or email addresses.  Reminder:  We continue to encourage our students to wear winter coats, not blankets, to school.

Important Dates:

2/13    Half-day Inservice, 11:30 dismissal

2/15    NMTCC Open House, 5:30 p.m.;

PVHS Program Information Night, 7:00 p.m.

2/19    Holiday – Presidents’ Day

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Donna Milligan, Principal, PVMS West
