Dear PVMS West Families,

Although there are only sixteen student days in November, this month is filled with many events.  The first marking period concluded yesterday, and report cards will be available electronically in Home Access Center (HAC) after noon on the 9th.  Please contact our main office if you would like to request a paper copy of your child’s report card.

November 7th – There is no school on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

4Sight Mathematics Tests – This month the majority of our students will participate in 4Sight Mathematics testing.  Similar to the English/Language Arts CDT’s that our students took last month, these assessments are used as a diagnostic tool to provide information about your child’s strengths and needs in the area of mathematics.  The assessments are not graded but do provide our teachers with information to guide instruction.

Middle School West Partners with Ankhor Math Tutoring – I have requested directions from the high school to assist interested families in connecting with this tutoring service.  I hope to share more details, soon.  Ankhor Math Tutoring, based at PVHS, provides a free online service for students in grades K-8 in our school district.  Our own high school students provide online tutoring, outside of school hours, at a mutually agreed upon time between the high school tutor and younger student/student’s parent.  Tutoring occurs one hour each week through collaborative documents, video chat, and an online whiteboard.  This is all provided for via the Ankhor website (https://ankhor.org/).

Fall Activity Night – Students from MS East and MS West will be invited to Home & School’s fall Activity Night. Please check your email for more information.

The Harlem Wizards return to PV - The Harlem Wizards will return to the PVHS gym for a night of entertainment on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10 in advance and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Download a ticket order form off the PVSD Foundation website and return it to school no later than Nov. 13.  Please make checks payable to the PVSD Foundation. Tickets will be sent home by Nov. 15.  Tickets sold on the night of the event will be $12. The concession stand will be open selling pretzels, hot dogs, and water. Harlem Wizards merchandise will also be available for sale during the game.  Money raised through this event supports the PVSD Foundation, which provides funding for educational programs that would not otherwise be available through tax dollars or other traditional sources. We look forward to seeing you at the game and watching the Wizards compete against our own PV teachers and staff. It's sure to be a fun evening for all!

Character Education Program, Change of date - Officer Stephen Rinker, of the Lower Frederick Township Police Department, will be meeting with our students to discuss Cyber-safety in early December instead of on November 14th.  In the meantime, West will be launching its One Book, One School reading initiative.  I Will Always Write Back, by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda, is a dual memoir that will inspire readers and/or listeners to look beyond their own lives and wonder about the world at large and their place in it.

American Education Week  –  All of our schools will be welcoming parents to visit on Tuesday, November 14th; Middle School West will welcome parents between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Click here for more information.

Be a Part of the Conversation  - On November 14th at 6:30 p.m., West will be hosting an informational event, “Have you had the conversation?  How to talk with your kids about substances.”  The conversation is intended for parents of elementary students; however, West parents are welcome.  Click here for content and registration information.

Turkey Trot - Save the date!  On Saturday morning, November 18th, PVMS West's Green Team will be hosting its first Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk on West's beautiful campus!  Fun for the entire family!

Parent/Teacher Conferences - Parent/teacher conferences will be offered on Monday, November 20th, and Tuesday, November 21st.  Middle school conferences offer parents/guardians the opportunity to meet with their child's instructional team.  Please know that conferences are not mandated, but our staff will be available on these two days to engage in conversations about a child's progress.  Likewise, if a team feels the need to meet with parents, a conference may also be initiated by the team of teachers.  We will be using SignUp Genius to schedule conferences this year, and although I had hoped to be ready with our links, we need a little more scheduling construction time.  I hope to send all team links between Wednesday and Friday of next week.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

Notes from Home and School:
