Principal's Message - November 17, 2017

posted Nov 17, 2017, 1:17 PM by Barbara Quintangeli   [ updated Nov 17, 2017, 1:20 PM ]
Dear PVMS West Families,

As this week comes to a close and we head into the Thanksgiving Holiday break, I have a number of items to share with you.

First, I would like to thank everyone for their flexibility regarding our need to move Activity Night from last Friday to last Saturday.  The kids had a great time, and we appreciated the support of our Home and School (East and West) parent volunteers!  Second, I’d also like to thank those of you who were able to visit with us on Tuesday, our Parent Visitation Day; we always enjoy sharing the day’s educational experiences with you.  Finally, the faculty and staff would like to thank Home and School for supporting our Thanksgiving luncheon on Wednesday; our students enjoy feasting with and enjoying the company of the West faculty.

The PVSD Foundation is excited to bring the Harlem Wizards back to the Valley for a night of entertainment on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Perkiomen Valley High School’s gym. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets will also be available tonight and will be $12. The concession stand will be open, and Harlem Wizards merchandise will also be available for sale during the game.  Money raised through this event supports the PVSD Foundation, which provides funding for educational programs that would not otherwise be available through tax dollars or other traditional sources. We look forward to seeing you at the game and watching the Wizards compete against our own PV teachers and staff. It's sure to be a fun evening for all!

Thanksgiving Break – Our Thanksgiving break begins at the end of the school day today.  School will resume on Monday, November 27, 2017.

Turkey Trot - Tomorrow morning, November 18th, PVMS West's Green Team will be hosting its first Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk on West's beautiful campus!  Fun for the entire family!  Registration, 8:00 a.m. – Walk/Race, 9:00 a.m. Click here for more information.

Parent/Teacher Conferences – It’s not too late to sign up!  Parent/teacher conferences will be offered on Monday, November 20th, and Tuesday, November 21st.  Middle school conferences offer parents/guardians the opportunity to meet with their child's instructional team.  Please know that conferences are not mandated, but our staff will be available on these two days to engage in conversations about a child's progress.  Likewise, if a team feels the need to meet with parents, a conference may also be initiated by the team of teachers.  We will be using SignUp Genius to schedule conferences this year, and although I had hoped to be ready with our links, we need a little more scheduling construction time.  I hope to send all team links between Wednesday and Friday of next week.

West’s Title I (Mathematics and ELA support) paraprofessionals, Mr. Pasquarello and Mrs. Reynolds, will be attending many student conferences; when they are not scheduled, you should be able to find them in rooms 231 (Mr. Pasquarello) or 212 (Mrs. Reynolds).

Activity Fee Reminder – All seventh- and eighth-grade activities are subject to an activity fee.  These fees, including any/all materials fees, should be directed to Mrs. Barber in our main office.  (First Lego League participants in grades 6-8 are charged a materials fee.)

End of First Trimester – December 1st marks the end of our first trimester as well as the first Viking Block rotation.  Seventh- and eighth-grade students will be choosing new Viking Block activities during the first week of December.

from West’s Music Team -  The Winter Concert is approaching fast; in fact, it is Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.  MS West’s bands, chorus, and orchestras will present a night of wonderful music.  This also means that our ensembles are in their final preparations.  If you are the parent of a student musician, please ask him/her to play/sing their music for you.

Musical Auditions - Auditions for the school musical Beauty and the Beast, Jr. will be held on December 11th with callbacks on the 12th.  Those who would like to participate are reminded to return the completed audition materials to Mr. Sands in room 104.

Coming to West – Two New Clubs - Mrs. Lesh is in the process of organizing our Student Council, and Mrs. Parks and Mrs. DeSanto will be launching a Best Buddies Club after we return from the Thanksgiving break.

Kudos to Mrs. Nelson’s Viking Block Journalists – Mrs. Nelson’s seventh-grade journalists are starting to submit articles to PVMS West’s website.

Character Education Program - Officer Stephen Rinker, of the Lower Frederick Township Police Department, will be meeting with our students to discuss Cyber-safety on December 12th.  In the meantime, West will be launching its One Book, One School reading initiative.  I Will Always Write Back, by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda, is a dual memoir that will inspire readers and/or listeners to look beyond their own lives and wonder about the world at large and their place in it.

Health Office Reminder -  Parents of sixth-grade students are required to submit a physical form for your child.  The physical forms can be found on the PV Website under Parents/Forms and must be completed by your physician and submitted as soon as possible.  In addition, Parents of 7th grade students are required to submit a dental form.  Those forms can also be found on the website.  Failure to submit these required forms results in examinations by our school physician and dentist in the spring.  If you are not sure if you've sent in the required forms, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Lind at 484.977.7210 ext. 4.  Thank you for your attention to this.

Ski/Snowboarding Club Information – Informational packets and permissions slips were distributed yesterday to students who expressed an interest in this club.  Please ask your child to share the materials with you.  Permission slips are due no later than 1/5/18; it is important to know that participation is limited to forty-five (45) students.  If you need to speak with an advisor, please email Mrs. Sabol (dsabol@pvsd.org) or Ms. Doran (ddoran@pvsd.org).

Ankhor Math Tutoring – Ankhor Math Tutoring, based at PVHS, provides a free online service for students in grades K-8 in our school district.  Our own high school students provide online tutoring, outside of school hours, at a mutually agreed upon time between the high school tutor and younger student/student’s parent.  Tutoring occurs one hour each week through collaborative documents, video chat, and an online whiteboard.  This is all provided for via the Ankhor website (https://ankhor.org/).

Create an Ankhor Math Tutoring account -

1.) Parents should go to the registration page on the main website, https://ankhor.org/#/register-here.

2.) Enter the PVMSW Verification Code: S001008B5m93.

3.) Select the type of account they wish to create (Learner).

4.) Follow the remaining instructions for signing-up.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

Fall/Winter Attire – Students are outside on the bus deck for as long as fifteen minutes in the morning before the school day begins.  As the temperatures drop, please be sure your child wears appropriate attire to be outside.

Notes from Home and School - Home and School is launching a Holiday Spirit Wear Sale today, 11/3/17-11/19/17!  Please click here to see the flyer.

Our Home and School has been in communication with the local food pantry; they are still doing their blanket drive as well as food collection (canned goods, dry goods, and toiletries, a priority).  West plans to keep a food collection bin in our main office; as it is filled, H&S will empty the bin/deliver the food.
