Dear West families,

Can you believe it?  Our first fall weekend has arrived, and it’s going to be a warm one!  Enjoy it!

Middle School Dance – What a success!  The kids danced/jumped and sang!  We were very fortunate to have many teachers, paraprofessionals, and, of course, Home and School parents support this lively activity.

Meet the Teacher Night, Thank You! – Thank you to all who attended our seventh- and eighth-grade Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday evening.  We appreciate the ongoing involvement of West’s parents.  If you have any feedback about Meet the Teacher Night, please let me know.

Book Fair, Thank You! - Thanks to all who helped with and/or supported PVMS West’s Book Fair.  (All proceeds support our PVMS West library.)

CDT’s – Classroom Diagnostic Assessment – Our English/Language Arts students will be taking ELA CDT’s next week.  These diagnostic tests are administered via the computer and provide us with information about strengths and needs.  The assessment is not graded but does provide our teachers with information to guide instruction.  (Sixth grade ELA will test on Monday and Tuesday, seventh grade ELA will test on Tuesday and Wednesday, and eighth grade will test on Wednesday and Thursday.  If students do not finish, we will manage additional time during periods 1 or 10.)

PSSA/Keystone Information and Parent Letters – The spring 2017 PSSA/Keystone reports will be sent home on September 29, 2017.  Student envelopes will contain a state letter along with assessment results.

Mid-marking Period – September 29th marks the mid-point of the first marking period.  Please check Home Access (HAC) and contact teams/individual teachers about any questions or concerns that you may have.

Viking Block Activities – Our seventh- and eighth-grade students will be selecting Viking Block activities soon!  We are currently organizing our list of activities and advisors.  In early October, an email will be sent out to families for students to select the first round of activities for the school year.  Activities will take place two days per cycle from mid-October through mid-November.  The other four days per cycle will remain advisory days.

Walk for West – We are gearing up for our annual “Walk for West” fundraiser which is scheduled for October 12th.

Sixth-grade Camp – Last week, I sent out an email to our sixth-grade parents about our camp/team building program.  Our sixth graders were given the same documents on Monday.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  For detailed information about our attendance procedures, please refer to the Student Handbook.  The Handbook can be found on the PVSD webpage by clicking the Parents tab, Handbooks, and Middle School Handbook.  As per my last Principal’s Report, the current attendance policy as written is due for revision this fall.  Please stay tuned for updates.

Dress Code Reminder – West is a climate-controlled building, so many of our classrooms run a little cool.  All students are encouraged to leave a sweatshirt and sweatpants in their lockers or gym lockers.  Also, for students who prefer to wear flip-flops, we also suggest leaving a pair of sneakers on site for classes such as PE, Tech Ed, FCS, science, and art.  Our dress code can also be found in our Student Handbook.

Home and School Reminders -

Beginning October 6, 2017, PVMS West – ID# 26365 – has the opportunity to participate in and earn cash from A+ School Rewards, a great fundraising program run through your local Giant.

West also receives money for every Box Top we collect.  PVMS West Home and School will be running its first contest of the school year.  Just clip Box Tops off specially marked products and send them in with your student in an envelope/baggie marked “Box Tops.”  (Don’t forget to include your child’s homeroom teacher’s name on the envelope/baggie.)  Box Tops are due by September 29th.
