Dear PVMS West Families,

The first marking period report cards were made available in the Home Access Center (HAC) yesterday.  (Paper copies are always available upon request.)  The information that I am sharing this week largely provides reminders about Activity Night, conferences, American Education Week, and additional items.

PVSD Welcomes George Couros and MSE and MSW Send Teams to the AMLE National Convention – On Tuesday, the PVSD faculty and staff welcomed George Couros, an “Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Consultant” as well as the author  of The Innovator’s Mindset.  From challenging teachers to incorporate innovative technology/new tools, to inspiring teachers to unlock student potential, to encouraging teachers (and students) to create positive digital identities, Mr. Couros influenced our teachers to make lasting connections, take risks, and continue to make a difference each and every day.  Similarly, the West team that traveled to the Middle Level Convention in Philadelphia attended over fifty workshops highlighting best practices and the future of teaching and learning.  Teachers, counselors, and administrators from schools all over the country/world came together to network and share amazing philosophies, ideas, and programs.  The West team, in particular, is looking forward to sharing with their professional peers and putting new learning into action.

PV vs. Pennridge Playoff Game, Tonight! - Many middle school students will be attending the football game tonight, Friday, November 10th. PVHS is expecting a large crowd, so the administration team is strongly encouraging you to attend the game with your middle school student. We want everyone to have a safe and exciting evening cheering our PV Vikings on to victory. Go Vikings!!

Fall Activity Night – On Saturday, November 11, 2017, students from MS East and MS West will be invited to Home and School’s fall Activity Night hosted by MS West.

American Education Week  –  All of our schools will be welcoming parents to visit on Tuesday, November 14th; Middle School West will welcome parents between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  Please click here for more information.

Be a Part of the Conversation  - On November 14th at 6:30 p.m., West will be hosting an informational event, “Have you had the conversation?  How to talk with your kids about substances.”  The conversation is intended for parents of elementary students; however, West parents are welcome.  Click here for more information and registration information.

Ski/Snowboarding Club Informational Meeting – Students will meet with club advisors on November 16th during period one in the MSW auditorium.  Informational packets and permissions slips will be distributed.  Please ask your child to share these materials with you if he/she is interested/attended this meeting.  If you need to reach an advisor, please email Mrs. Sabol (dsabol@pvsd.org) or Ms. Doran (ddoran@pvsd.org).

The Harlem Wizards return to PV - The Harlem Wizards will return to the PVHS gym for a night of entertainment on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m.  Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10 in advance and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Download a ticket order form off the PVSD Foundation website and return it to school no later than Nov. 13.  Please make checks payable to the PVSD Foundation. Tickets will be sent home by Nov. 15.  Tickets sold on the night of the event will be $12. Money raised through this event supports the PVSD Foundation, which provides funding for educational programs that would not otherwise be available through tax dollars or other traditional sources. We look forward to seeing you at the game and watching the Wizards compete against our own PV teachers and staff. It's sure to be a fun evening for all!

Turkey Trot - On Saturday morning, November 18th, PVMS West's Green Team will be hosting its first Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk on West's beautiful campus!  Fun for the entire family!  Registration, 8:00 a.m. – Walk/Race, 9:00 a.m.

4Sight Mathematics Tests, Continue – This month the majority of our students will participate in 4Sight Mathematics testing.  Similar to the English/Language Arts CDT’s that our students took last month, these assessments are used as a diagnostic tool to provide information about your child’s strengths and needs in the area of mathematics.  The assessments are not graded but do provide our teachers with information to guide instruction.

Ankhor Math Tutoring – Ankhor Math Tutoring, based at PVHS, provides a free online service for students in grades K-8 in our school district.  Our own high school students provide online tutoring, outside of school hours, at a mutually agreed upon time between the high school tutor and younger student/student’s parent.  Tutoring occurs one hour each week through collaborative documents, video chat, and an online whiteboard.  This is all provided for via the Ankhor website (https://ankhor.org/).

Create an Ankhor Math Tutoring account -

1.) Parents should go to the registration page on the main website, https://ankhor.org/#/register-here.

2.) Enter the PVMSW Verification Code: S001008B5m93.

3.) Select the type of account they wish to create (Learner).

4.) Follow the remaining instructions for signing-up.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - Parent/teacher conferences will be offered on Monday, November 20th, and Tuesday, November 21st.  Middle school conferences offer parents/guardians the opportunity to meet with their child's instructional team.  Please know that conferences are not mandated, but our staff will be available on these two days to engage in conversations about a child's progress.  Likewise, if a team feels the need to meet with parents, a conference may also be initiated by the team of teachers.  We will be using SignUp Genius to schedule conferences this year, and although I had hoped to be ready with our links, we need a little more scheduling construction time.  I hope to send all team links between Wednesday and Fridayof next week.

from West’s Music Team:  The Winter Concert is approaching fast; in fact, it is Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.  The West bands, chorus, and orchestras will present a night of wonderful music.  This also means that our ensembles are in their final preparations.  If you are the parent of a student musician, please ask him/her to play/sing their music for you.

Character Education Program, Change of date - Officer Stephen Rinker, of the Lower Frederick Township Police Department, will be meeting with our students to discuss Cyber-safety on December 12th.  In the meantime, West will be launching its One Book, One School reading initiative.  I Will Always Write Back, by Caitlin Alifirenka, is a dual memoir that will inspire readers and/or listeners to look beyond their own lives and wonder about the world at large and their place in it.

Health Office Reminder:  Parents of sixth-grade students are required to submit a physical form for your child.  The physical forms can be found on the PV Website under Parents/Forms and must be completed by your physician and submitted as soon as possible.  In addition, Parents of 7th grade students are required to submit a dental form.  Those forms can also be found on the website.  Failure to submit these required forms results in examinations by our school physician and dentist in the spring.  If you are not sure if you've sent in the required forms, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Lind at 484.977.7210 ext. 4.  Thank you for your attention to this.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

Fall/Winter Attire – Students are outside on the bus deck for as long as fifteen minutes in the morning before the school day begins.  As the temperatures drop, please be sure your child wears appropriate attire to be outside.

Notes from Home and School:

Home and School is launching a Holiday Spirit Wear Sale today, 11/3/17-11/19/17!  Please see the attached flyer.

Our Home and School has been in communication with the local food pantry; they are still doing their blanket drive as well as food collection (canned goods, a priority).  West plans to keep a canned food collection bin in our main office, and as it is filled, H&S will empty the bin/deliver the food.

Important Dates – November

11/3 through 11/19 - Home and School Holiday Spirit Wear Sale

11/14 - American Education Parent Visitation Day, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

11/20 and 11/21 - Conferences

11/22, 11/23, 11/24 - Holiday, No School

A reminder to parents:  If you ever need clarification or assistance with anything mentioned in my reports or if you have general questions, please call (484-977-7210, ext. 3505) or email (dmilligan@pvsd.org).  I will be happy to assist you.

Have a wonderful weekend!  (Special thanks to those who are coming out to supervise/support Activity Night!)

Donna Milligan, Principal, PVMS West
