Dear PVMS West Families,

I hope all are well and looking forward to the holiday weekend.  A reminder to all:  Students are off on Monday, February 19, 2018.  Please see the informational items below.

New News:

Thank you to all of our eighth-grade students’ parents who attended the NMTCC Open House and/or the Eighth-grade Parent Night last evening!

Keeping student safety and security foremost in our thoughts is always a priority at MS West.  This week our students participated in the Standard Response Protocols specific to:  Lock Out, Lock Down, Safe Area/Shelter, and Fire Drill/Evacuation.  (The students took each drill seriously and performed them well.)  On Thursday, the LFPD partnered with us to review both our fire drill and dismissal procedures.  We at West are expressly thankful – what an amazing community!  (As the district progresses through Comprehensive Planning, we will be connecting with parents and community members who would like to serve on a Safety Committee.  If you would like to lend your talents, please contact me by email/telephone.  See below.)

Congratulations to our sixteen talented Middle School West students who have been selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educator's District 11 String Fest!  Pottsgrove School District will be hosting the Fest on Friday, February 23, 2018 at Pottsgrove Middle School.  Our eight sixth-grade students and eight eighth-grade students have been practicing a rigorous folder of music in addition to their school orchestra music, and they have been staying after school for extra rehearsals. On the day of the event, they will rehearse with students from twelve other school districts; their day will culminate in a concert for family and friends at 7:00 p.m.

Beauty and the Beast, Jr.  - Come out and support the drama club who will be performing Beauty and the Beast, Jr. Opening night is Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m.  There will be two encore performances on Saturday, March 17th at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 18th at 2:00 p.m. Seating is assigned, and all tickets are $8.00. Before the Sunday matinee, there will be a Princess and Prince Tea in the cafeteria with munchies, crafts, and some special visitors from the cast for preshow photo opportunities. Tickets for the tea are an additional $8 which includes a child and an adult over 18 years of age. If you are interested in tickets, please contact Ms. Krista Yerkes at kyerkes@pvsd.org.

Montgomery County Intermediate Unit Resource Expo – The MCIU is pleased to present an evening (March 22, 2018, 6:00-8:00 p.m., PVHS Cafeteria) of resources for families, educators, and students.  As many as fifty vendors, service providers from throughout the tri-county area, will be on hand to discuss supports, estate planners, summer camp groups, community and advocacy groups, for students with disabilities, their families, and educators.  In addition, attendees will be afforded the opportunity to meet and speak with representatives from colleges, technical programs, employment supports, community resources, financial planners, coordination providers, recreation and leisure groups, etc.

from the Counseling Center:  8th grade - Program Planning - Today, the eighth-grade students were introduced to Naviance, and they started to enter their electives!  In addition, some may have started to work on a learning styles inventory and/or a cluster finder.  Middle school counselors would like the eighth graders to have their electives entered as soon as possible, and the high school counselors would like them to become familiar with Naviance and complete the two surveys prior entering ninth grade.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210.  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).  For more information, please click on Attendance Guidelines under the Parents tab.  At MS West, Student Attendance Improvement Plans are initiated by district-adopted attendance letters and implemented by our social worker, a counselor, and/or an administrator in conjunction with a parent(s).

from the Nurse’s office:  Parents of sixth-grade students are required to submit a physical form for your child.  Physical forms can be found on the PV Website under Parents/Forms and must be completed by your physician and submitted as soon as possible.  In addition, parents of seventh-grade students are required to submit a dental form.  This form can also be found on the website.  Failure to submit these required forms results in examinations by our school physician and dentist in the spring.  If you are not sure if you've sent in the required forms, please contact the school nurse, Mrs. Lind at 484.977.7210, ext. 4.

from PVMS West Yearbook:  Yearbook Ordering Information – MS West is partnering with Jostens this year to bring you a convenient way for students to order their yearbooks.  All can order online at jostensyearbooks.com, by phone, or through the mail. It’s quick, easy, and ends the hassle of bringing money to school.  (Please refer to the form you received in the mail for ordering/payment options.)  Place your order today!  (If you have any questions regarding the PVMS West yearbook, please email dmuscatello@pvsd.org.)

from PV Foundation:  Dodgeball Tournament on March 3: Registration will close for this event at 9 p.m. on Jan. 28 (note: we have moved the registration close date up a week). If you haven't registered your team yet, please go to https://perkiomen.revtrak.net/. Visit our website for more details about the tournament: http://pvsdfoundation.org/events/

from PVSD:  Winter Weather and Attire – It is time to think about school delays, early dismissals, and school closures.  In the event of inclement weather, families will be notified via the Blackboard Connect/Connect 5 system, which informs families of delayed openings, early dismissals, and school closures.  If a call is not received in your home and you listen to the radio or television stations, our school district closing number is 317.  Please talk with your child about procedures for an early dismissal from school.  Please be sure to update your contact information via the Home Access Center (HAC) or by notifying our office of any changes to your emergency contact numbers or email addresses.  Reminder:  Students should wear winter coats, not blankets, to school.

Important Dates:
