Principal’s Report:  August 31st, 2017

Middle School West is off to a great start!  New and returning students are adjusting to their schedules, and we held our seventh- and eighth-grade meetings on the first day of school to review building information.  Positive attitudes, friendliness, excitement, and respect prevail within the school; all are points of pride we hope to carry consistently forward!

On day two, we ran through three of our safety drills (Lockout, Lockdown, and Shelter), and on day three, we practiced our first fire drill.  I was very proud of our student body; all understood the seriousness of the drills and behaved responsibly and cooperatively.

West would like to welcome the faculty and staff members who are new to our school community:  Melissa Overholser, library aide; Brenda Continelli, counseling/attendance secretary; Kristen Hollenbach, emotional support teacher; and Bradley Merkl-Gump, Journey’s eighth-grade social studies teacher.

Please review the informational items listed below for upcoming events and reminders.

School forms:  Several important forms were sent home in the back-to-school packet.  Please be sure to return the following forms as soon as possible:

Limerick – Authorization for Student Pick-up

Activity Fee Form – if applicable (7th and 8th grade only)

Health Emergency – also available online

Yearbook Authorization – optional

Picture Day:  Picture day is Thursday, September 14, 2017.  The forms were distributed in the first-day packet.

New Resources:  All students in sixth-grade will be using Discovering Our Past, A History of the World in social studies.  All seventh-grade, English students will be using Collections, and all Algebra IA students will be using Glencoe’s Course Three.  All of these print/digital resources were approved by our School Board in June, 2017.

7th and 8th Grade Meet the Teacher Night:  Parents of 7th and 8th graders are invited to join us for our annual Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.  The evening is intended for parents and will offer an overview of the grade-level curriculum and your child’s middle school schedule.  The evening will formally begin at 7:00 p.m. (in period 2) and conclude at 9:00 p.m.  Students will fill out duplicate schedules.  One will travel home with each child; we will keep the duplicates available in the main office on the night of the event.  (ELD/ESL and Gifted meetings that evening will begin at 6:30 p.m.)

Book Fair:  Our library will host the annual fall Book Fair from September 18th-22st.  Please consider volunteering to help at our Book Fair.  Set up will be Friday, September 15th, and students will shop during the week of September 18th.  Click on this link to sign up/shop:

Everyone may shop online from September 10th-22nd.  All online purchases will be delivered during book fair week, and all proceeds support our PVMS West Library.  Thank you!

Acceptable Use Policy:

All PVSD students have access to the Internet and are assigned accounts for the purpose of conducting school business and communicating.  Use of the Internet is monitored and measures have been taken to avoid access to inappropriate material and websites.  We encourage parents to review School Board Policy 815 to become familiar with acceptable vs. unacceptable use of the Internet and/or our systems.  Students at PVMS West discuss “acceptable use” with their teachers and are asked to sign a User Acknowledgment Form.  A copy of this “User Acknowledgement Form” is included with the other attachments below.
