MSW Update - September 5, 2019

Mrs. Milligan
Dear West Families,

Our second week has gone as smoothly as our first, and we are looking forward to Meet the Teacher Night (Grades 7 and 8) on Tuesday, Sept. 10th!  All of us at MS West appreciate the ongoing involvement of West parents and our Home and School volunteers.

In addition, our fall sports season is in full swing, with many teams beginning their game schedules.  Go, West! Re: Fall Sports Pick-Up – The fall sports season is a very busy one at PVMS West.  For car cars pulling along the curb by the sidewalks, please go down as far as you can toward the main entrance of the school.  Once the curb area is full, please park in the parking lot. Please do not park along the curbs of the parking lot as this creates too narrow of a driving lane and limits the visibility of pedestrians.  Our primary concern is the safety of our students. If everyone can be on time, park in a spot, and be wary of pedestrian traffic, we can make athletic pick-up run smoothly and efficiently.

 New News:

On Thursday, September 5th, our sixth-grade students secured their Chromebooks.  (Those who did not pick up their devices will be able to receive them from the Chromebook Service Center in our library.)

MAPS Growth Assessments Begin – Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) measures what students know and are ready to learn next. By dynamically adjusting to each student’s responses, MAP creates a personalized assessment experience that accurately measures performance. Results will provide information about student performance in relationship to grade level standards, topics, and skills, as well as student growth beyond grade level expectations.

During the month of September, your child will take the MAP® Growth™ test in Reading and Mathematics on a computer. Typical test duration varies based upon grade, but early elementary students generally average 30 minutes while middle and high school students average 50 minutes.  MAP Growth tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.  Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject, and have the same starting performance level. During parent-teacher conferences in November, we will review your child’s performance on this assessment.  We are truly excited about being able to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit.

FLL - First Lego League (FLL) will be starting up in the next few weeks.  Mr. Burns will be holding an informational meeting during school (period 1, grades 7 and 8; period 10, grade 6) on Wednesday, September 11th for all interested students.  Interested parent coaches should contact Mr. Burns at brburns@pvsd.org for further information.

The American Math Competition, Version 8 - is a test designed for advanced middle school students who are interested in testing themselves as mathematical thinkers.   The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice test. The material covered on the test is middle level math curriculum, including topics such as:  probability, estimation, percent, spatial visualization, everyday application, and reading/interpreting charts. No Algebra is required. The contest is for individual recognition only.  Interested students must see Mrs. Lederman for a paper copy of the registration form and return a signed registration form to Mrs. Lederman, room 207, no later than Wednesday, September 18th by 2:20 p.m.

Title I Meetings - West will be holding two Title I Parent-School Partnership meetings.  The first will be held on Wednesday (9/18/19) morning at 7:30 a.m.; the second will be held Wednesday (9/18/19) evening at 6:00 p.m.  We are hoping to meet with parents of West students who either have received or will be receiving Title I support/services. The objectives of the meeting are to inform parents of the school's participation in Title I, to explain what is required of a Title I school, to discuss how to improve parent-school communications, and to inform our parents of their rights to be involved. Each year, we invite parents who are willing to provide input regarding the planning, review, and improvement of our Title I policy, program, allocation of funds, as well as a number of other Title I-specific topics.

Sixth-grade’s Camp - Outdoor School – West’s sixth-grade teachers will be sending a letter and permission slip home for a field trip to camp - outdoor school. Please see your email for details.  (The main office will follow up with an email and attachments as well.) If any family needs financial assistance, please contact a school counselor or principal.

 1. Email powerpacks@pvsd.org with the name(s) of the student(s), grade(s), school(s) they will be attending, and any allergy or food restrictions.

2. Fill out the form online (one form for each student) PV Power Packs.

Activity Fee:  If your seventh- or eighth-grade child is planning to play a sport this year or take part in a club/activity, there is a $100 fee each year; this covers all activities for the year. A complete list of activities can be found on West’s website. Click here to read attached Activity Letter.

from Mrs. Lind - Nurse’s Notes:  Welcome back to what I hope to be another healthy and successful school year!  Please remember that sixth-grade students require a physical examination and updated immunizations if necessary, and seventh-grade students require a dental examination. If your child has had these examinations over the summer, please be sure to send a copy to the Nurse's office so your child's health record can be updated.  Student's health records and immunization cards stay with your child throughout his/her school years, and is important that this information stays up to date. Your cooperation with this is most appreciated! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child. I can be reached at 484-977-7210, ext. 4 or emailed at clind@pvsd.org.

 from Home and School:

· Please join us for our first meeting, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the library.  We'll be planning the year, especially our first big event- Walk for West.
