First Lego League (FLL) is a club activity for teams of Middle School students geared at early robotics systems that utilizes Lego pieces, tools, coding, and mechanics in completing a series of tasks for the execution of a final goal.  The following website will give you a glimpse at what this entails: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll  This year's theme centers around Star Wars:  https://www.firstinspires.org/  Where?  When?  Check your email.  Who?   6th through 8th grade students   Who else?  Parent volunteers are needed to serve as team coaches (2 coaches per team of 6 students)  Cost?      Activity fee + $50 for supplies for robots and challenge set, team registration, competition….  FLL’s first meeting is on Monday, 9/23/19 to inform, designate teams, acknowledge parent volunteers, fill parent coach/helpers, etc.

West and West’s Student Council will host our first school DANCE!  PVMS West students are invited to join. Please check your email for date and time details. The cost to attend is $5. Snacks will be on sale during the dance.  (If students plan to snack, they should bring an additional money to purchase food items.) In order to be eligible to attend the dance, students must be in attendance at school on the day of the dance. Also, West dances are only open to PVMS West students.  Parents can drop off their student(s) at the location designated in my email. We ask that each student secure a ride home promptly. Carpooling is encouraged. (It is a good idea to establish a pick-up point, i.e. a certain light pole, the flag, concrete bench, etc.)  Students are encouraged to dress as they would for school, and shoes are to remain on for the duration of the dance.

Mid-marking Period, approaching – Oct. 2nd marks the mid-point of the first marking period.  Please check Home Access (HAC) and contact teams/individual teachers about any questions or concerns that you may have.

Reminders:

The PAYS (Pennsylvania Youth Survey) – Our sixth- and eighth-grade students will be participating in this survey on October 2, 2019.  For more information about the survey, please see - https://www.pccd.pa.gov/Juvenile-Justice/Pages/Pennsylvania-Youth-Survey-(PAYS)-2019.aspx, specifically “Information about the Pennsylvania Youth Survey.”  More information to come.

Dress Reminder – West is a climate-controlled building, so many of our classrooms run a little cool.  All students are encouraged to leave a sweatshirt and sweatpants in their lockers or gym lockers.  Also, for students who prefer to wear flip-flops, we also suggest leaving a pair of sneakers on site for classes such as PE, Tech Ed, FCS, science, and art.  Our dress code can be found in our Student Handbook.

PVSD FoundationPlease click here to see the Boon Supply (formerly Mixed Bag Designs) fundraiser flyer.

Sixth-grade Camp- The sixth-grade teams will be participating in an outdoor school. The outdoor school program affords students experiential-based lessons designed to complement the science curriculum.  In addition, students will participate in group challenges to foster teambuilding. Dates: Please see your email.

Activity Fee:  If your seventh- or eighth-grade child is planning to play a sport this year or take part in a club/activity, there is a $100 fee each year; this covers all activities for the year. A complete list of activities can be found on West’s website. Please click here to see the Activity Letter.

Attendance/Absences – If you know your child will be absent from school, please be sure to contact Mrs. Brenda Continelli, our counseling secretary, at bcontinelli@pvsd.org or by calling our office at 484-977-7210, Press #1.  For detailed information about our attendance procedures, please refer to the Student Handbook.  (The Handbook can be found on the PVSD webpage by clicking the Parents tab, Handbooks, and Middle School Handbook.)  Also, please remember to send in excuse notes, detailing the date of the absence, reason for the absence, and a parent signature, within three days of the absence(s).

from Mrs. Lind - Nurse’s Notes:  Welcome back to what I hope to be another healthy and successful school year!  Please remember that sixth-grade students require a physical examination and updated immunizations if necessary, and seventh-grade students require a dental examination. If your child has had these examinations over the summer, please be sure to send a copy in to the Nurse's office so your child's health record can be updated.  Student's health records and immunization cards stay with your child throughout his/her school years, and is important that this information stays up to date. Your cooperation with this is most appreciated! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child. I can be reached at 484-977-7210, ext. 4 or emailed at clind@pvsd.org.

from West’s Home and School:  The first few weeks of school are always busy, and the Home and School would like to check in to make sure you have all of the information that we have sent home.  Please check folders and backpacks for our Volunteer Sheet, a Kidstuff Book, our Walk for West flyer, and a cool MAGNET inside the Walk for West flyer envelope with important phone numbers, Home and School's gift to our West families.  We hope you enjoy them and find them useful! If you are missing any of that information or have any questions, please contact Amy Butler at amyjpowers@hotmail.com or any of our board members:  Kim Fortino, Stacey Verguldi, and Christine Leifer.    You can also check out our Facebook page for more information.

Home and School is also collecting donations for our students to use when they go outside at lunchtime, our upcoming first dance, and the East/West Activity Night.  If you would like to help, please click on the following sign-up genius link:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E054DA5A92AA57-donations.

Looking forward to fall,

Donna Milligan, Principal, PVMS West
