Mrs. Milligan
Dear West Families,

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Middle School West has had a fantastic start to the 2019-2020 school year!  New and returning students are adjusting to their schedules, and, as planned, we held our grade-level and cafeteria meetings on the first day of school.  Excitement and positive attitudes continued throughout the week; it is possible that looking forward to a four-day weekend factored into our students’ excitement.

On the second day, we practiced our Lock Out, Lock Down, Safe Area, and Evacuation drills.  I was very proud of our students, all of whom understood the seriousness of the drills and behaved both responsibly and cooperatively. Please click here to read more information about how we would respond in the event of an incident at the Limerick Generating Station.

Today, our seventh- and eighth-grade students secured their Chromebooks.  (Those who did not pick up their devices will be able to receive them from the Chromebook Service Center in our library next week.  Also, I am hearing that the sixth-grade Chromebooks will be arriving in the near future….)

New Staff:  West would like to welcome Shona Bradley to our paraprofessional staff!  Welcome, Shona!

Orchestra Update:  Ms. Hoffman’s starting date has yet to be determined.  West’s music department, counselors, and administrators are looking for parent support in encouraging student-musician patience during this transitional time.

Seventh- and Eighth-grade Meet the Teacher Night, Sept. 10th:  Parents of seventh and eighth graders are invited to join us for our annual Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.  The evening is intended for parents and will offer an overview of the grade-level curriculum and your child’s middle school schedule.  The evening will formally begin at 7:00 p.m. (in period 2) and conclude at 9:00 p.m.  Students will fill out duplicate schedules on Monday and/or Tuesday.  One will travel home with each child; we will keep the duplicates available in the main office on the night of the event.  (During the “lunch” period, the book fair will be available in the library, the counselors will be available in the cafeteria, and Mrs. Lederman, our gifted teacher, will be available in room 207.)

Back-to-School Book Fair, Sept. 9-13, 2019:  Extended hours, Tuesday, 9/10/19, 6:00-8:30 p.m., during Meet the Teacher Night.  Shop Online throughout the fair, https://www.scholastic.com/bf/pvmsw.  Proceeds will be used to purchase new books/resources for our MSW Library.  Cash, credit cards, Scholastic eWallet, and checks, made payable to PVMSW, are all accepted at the book fair.  Thank you for supporting West’s library! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Quintangeli, the MSW Librarian, bquintangeli@pvsd.org or (484)977-7210.

School forms:  Several important forms were sent home in the back-to-school packet.  If your child has not returned the Emergency Form and Limerick Form to his or her homeroom teacher, please ask him or her to do so as soon as possible. Please review the attached Limerick Letter.

Power Packs:  The volunteer run PV Power Packs Program offers free meals and snacks to students in need of food during the weekends. Bags of food will be given to students on the last school day before every weekend. There is no requirement to provide any financial information.  If you would like to have your student(s) receive Power Packs, you will need to sign up in one of the following ways:

 1. Email powerpacks@pvsd.org with the name(s) of the student(s), grade(s), school(s) they will be attending, and any allergy or food restrictions.

2. Fill out the form online (one form for each student) PV Power Packs.

(Students are NOT automatically set to continue receiving a Power Pack even if they received one last year.)  YOU ONLY NEED TO DO ONE OF THE ABOVE TO REGISTER!

Activity Fee:  If your seventh- or eighth-grade child is planning to play a sport this year or take part in a club/activity, there is a $100 fee each year; this covers all activities for the year. A complete list of activities can be found on West’s website. Click here to read attached Activity Letter.

Home and School Information:   Please join us for our first meeting on September 17th at 7:00 p.m. in West’s library.  Click here to see our attached fundraiser flyer - Umbrellas and Spirit Wear Sale!

Enjoy a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!
